The friends of mayowood residence and historic sites

The Friends of Mayowood Residence was launched in 1981 by an informal group of six women working together on projects to benefit Mayowood, the historic former home of three generations of the Charles H. Mayo family that has belonged to the History Center of Olmsted County since 1965.  Recognizing Mayowood’s significance and conservation needs, they formed an independent, nonprofit volunteer organization dedicated to enhancing Mayowood as a historical site, preserving its interior furnishings, collections and grounds, and promoting its appreciation and use by the community.

In its first year, the group initiated an annual winter holiday tradition, Christmas-themed tours that continue to fulfill their original goals:  to attract visitors to Mayowood and  raise funds for its preservation.  Through contributions, membership dues and the sponsorship of various other fundraising events in succeeding years, it has made substantial contributions to Mayowood’s maintenance and preservation and returned many Mayo family artifacts to their original home.

The group changed its name to The Friends of Mayowood Residence and Historic Sites in 1996 to reflect a broadened mission that included support for historic properties throughout southeastern Minnesota.  To date, it has raised over $500,000 and contributed countless volunteer hours to benefit Mayowood and other sites.

From its original six members, the group’s membership has grown to include more than 200 people who understand that Mayowood is a unique and valuable cultural resource.  Through their support of The Friends of Mayowood Residence and Historic Sites, these individuals are contributing to the public’s understanding of local history and the Mayo family, as well as increasing its appreciation of landscape architecture and the decorative arts.
